Why would a Hong Kong Chinese boy be named Jeremiah?

As I read a book, I tried to understand the background of the author. I think it help me a lot in understanding and evaluating the book. Thus, I think I should tell a bit of my story along with GOSP4EL blog.
In 1985 I went to China Baptist Theological College in Tai Kok Tsui of Kowloon, I didn’t realize that I would be in Bible Translation ministry.  And my name was not Jeremiah.
In the class of “books of prophets” Dr. Ambacher, who used to teach the book of Isaiah as example of the course, was using the book of Jeremiah. I thought that was the only time he did in his many years of teaching the courses. In the course I was very impressed by the book and the prophet Jeremiah. One day I was on the ferry to City Hall for a concert and there was a kind of urge or calling for me using Jeremiah as my name. Then I started using Jeremiah as my name, while some teachers and students thought it was kind of strange.

Sometimes, later I thought I was too bad and I didn’t know how to speak. I was not good enough to be a full time minister.  One day I went to Dr. Ambacher’s office and told him that I am going to quit. I still remembered that he told me that he loved me. That’s the first time in my life, I heard from a person that he loved me. He asked me to finish the study no matter I would be a business man or do something else. But I told him that I was going to a concert that evening, then I would pack and leave next morning. I took the ferry to City Hall with a heavy heart for the concert. As I got the bulletin at the entrance of the concert hall, I was astonished that the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra was going to play Symphony of Jeremiah. The vocalist were singing Lamentation in Hebrew. I had studied a bit of Hebrew at that time, and I knew that the meaning of Jeremiah was God established, appointed, or put in high place. I was not able to wait until the end of the performance. I was crying and left. Next day, I told Dr. Ambacher about what happened and I thought God still wanted me to continue my study. Since then I kept using the name Jeremiah and started the journey with the calling of Jeremiah.

ScriptSource.org 與苗文書寫系統

文章內容曾于2011年東南亞語言學會議中發表。
苗文,也稱為老苗文、柏格理苗文。苗文背后有很多有血、有淚、有趣的故事。你可以谷歌“柏格理和苗文”,參閱“在未知的中國”和其他 Samuel Pollard的著作了解更多細節。
苗文Unicode已經在近年誕生。可用于苗族和其他苗文書寫系統的文字處理。。謝謝語言技術專家們的努力。但大多數苗語使用者無法閱讀英 文,scriptsource 的材料以英語為主。盼望這些材料、使用方法,早日有中文翻譯。苗文鍵盤仍在發展階段。有人可以幫忙翻譯嗎?苗文歷史不短,有不少手抄本文獻。如果有人能開 發一個苗文字符識別工具就好了。如能可以幫忙,請與我聯系。
請為到這些材料、翻譯、工作、使用群體代求。願這文字系統為到祂的榮耀,被廣泛使用。
”The Uses and Users of the Miao Script“ has just published recently. The work that I coauthored with Dr. Eric Drewry You can download the PDF for free. Miao Script was also known as Pollard Script. There are interesting stories behind. You can google "Samuel Pollard and Miao" for more details.
Now the writing script are in Unicode and ready to be used for Miao data processing. Thank you for all the good work and effort by script technologists. Most of the users may not be able to read English. Please let me know if you would like to help. I wish the script and these document can be available in Chinese. There are a number of data in hand written form, it would be nice, if someone can develop a character recognition tools. I think the keyboard is still under the development. Please keep praying for this and the users. Please also pray that script will be widely used for His glory.

全球、國際Global\International 與華人全球宣教的反思

今天在數以萬計的華人當中,不學英語、法語,就不能參與跨文化的工作嗎?



過去20多年在國際機構與不少各國和西方的同事共事,確實有很多恩典和學習。但不住在反省和思考的課題也很多,其一就是:什么是國際InternationalGlobal全球環球、World世界等概念。
在國內人家問你會不會說外語,很多時候指的外語就是英語。過去英國殖民統治的影響和美國近百年在國際舞台的角色,讓英語成為了國際間交流的主要語言。不管在國際政治舞台占一席位、到英美澳紐等地進修、做買賣,不能或缺的是英語交流的能力。以前國外的宣教仕在華人當中傳福音、建立教會自然是學會華語才能事半功倍。過去華人教會、差會的宣教對象,主要以不同地方的華人為主。但今天華人的宣教士要參與華人以外的宣教,還是要加入國際宣教機搆,自然也要有好的英語基礎。在后殖民南半球和亞洲宣教動員的呼聲中,全球宣教不單指是西方向全球不同的國家、語言群體、萬族、萬民宣教。而是不分種族、國家、語言、文化、社會地位,讓世上所有領受了大使命的群體一同來參與,不幸地很多國際差會,還是以英語為主、以西方差會文化為主,華人的宣教仕還是要受了西方文化、語言的割禮才能成為“全球“的宣教仕。感謝西方宣教仕把福音東傳,讓我們有中文的聖經和今日華人的教會。但今天傳統西方宣教策略不一定是華人完成大使命最有效的方法。

八十多年前一為美國的年輕人面對喀克其奎族人的挑戰:“如果你的神那么偉大,為什么他不會說我們的語言。”而創立了威克理夫聖經翻譯會。今天在數以萬計的華人當中,不學英語、法語,就不能參與跨文化的工作嗎?國際差會的華人宣教仕的子女在西方的教育以外還有其他的選擇嗎?如果是國際、全球,就一定要以殖民語言為交流語言、西方的作風為基礎嗎?參與聖經翻譯、學聖經原文就一定要先學英語嗎?華人教會當中沒有神學家嗎?沒有人會原文嗎?沒有人會翻譯嗎?沒有願意被差派嗎?沒有管理、科技、工程、醫療人才嗎?華人教會要與神成大事我們缺的是什么呢?
身處地球村跟隨基督的華人,我們可以怎樣運用神所賜下的獨特文化、語言與資源,完成神托付華人教會的召命呢?
